Abstract:

Objective: The study was undertaken to determine oxidative DNA damage and free radical levels in patients with oral submucous fibrosis. Methods: The DNA damage was evaluated using comet assay and free radicals including nitric oxide and malondialdehyde levels were estimated using biochemical methods. Statistical analysis was performed using student t-test. Results: Comet assay revealed an increased frequency of comets in patients when compared to controls. The mean levels of nitric oxide and lipid peroxidation were significantly increased in patients when compared to controls.

Keywords:

Oral submucous fibrosis; DNA damage; comet assay; gingival epithelial cells, nitric oxide, malondialdehyde.
